Grand National - Need to Know!
- The Grand National is a world famous National Hunt race held annually at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool.
- The race has been held at Aintree each year since 1839, with the exception of 1916-18 during the First World War where it was held at Gatwick Racecourse and 1941-45 during the Second World War, when it was cancelled completely.
- The Grand National is the most valuable event in the National Hunt calendar with this year's prize fund totaling £975, 000.
- The Grand National is renowned for its severity and is widely considered to be the 'ultimate test of horse and jockey'. Certain fences, including Becker's Brook, The Chair and Canal Turn, are famous for their difficulty.
- Last year's Grand National was won by jockey Jason Maguire on Ballabriggs for trainer Donald McCain Jr and owner Trevor Hemmings.
